overview
The habanera is a popular musical style that emerged from a long and complex process in 19th-century Cuba. The Ernest Morató Foundation and the Palafrugell City Council commissioned us to create a sculptural and informational piece dedicated to this musical genre, which reaches its peak celebration in July during the famous festival of Calella de Palafrugell.
The monument, located at a roundabout at the entrance to the town, features a palm tree—an element that, in our view, naturally evokes the Caribbean. We decided to highlight this feature with a typographic ring displaying the titles of the ten most popular habaneras from the songbook, which are widely recognized and easily associated with the genre.
The result is a 32-meter structure made of weathering steel, offering a simple yet meaningful tribute to the habanera.

The typographic composition consists of a typographic ring with letters ranging in height from two meters to 50 cm. They form a 32-meter-long weathering steel structure that naturally oxidizes with the sea breeze. We decided to preserve the existing vegetation by creating an iron lattice that allows us to see the surroundings while also making it easy and natural to read the most popular titles of this musical style.
